'Celtic warrior burial' with late La Tène swords, prior to Caesar's conquest of Gaul. In and around Worms, we find numerous so-called 'warrior graves' (e.g., at Rheingewann, Herrnsheim, Heppenheim a.d.W.); in Roman times, we find elite residences ('villa') in these locations. Unlike the early Iron Age, dominated by an ostentatious display of wealth and power, this period seems to be dominated by a less hierarchical society. The late Iron Age swords were bent in a funerary context; the destruction of grave goods seems to have been a deliberate act associated with the burial; we find it not only in Worms, but throughout 'Celtic' regions, from North Italy, Southern Gaul to Britain.
A very nice cremation burial was found in Worms-Heppenheim with spear lance, sword and locally produced pottery. |
