Worms played an important role at the transition period between Middle Ages and modern times. Among others, the city hosted important imperial assemblies (or "diets") to reform the Holy Roman Empire, create a legal basis for the empire, and then there is of course the famous diet of Worms that catalysed the Reformation when Martin Luther appeared here in front of the emperor and representatives from across the entitre empire. Worms became a centre for Protestantism and Lutheran ideas: next to the Museum, the church of St Magnus is the oldest Protestant church in south-west Germany. And in the city, lots of Protestant publications were printed - making use of the newly developped technique of printing: among others, the earliest English translation of the Bible.
